History**
Established in 1911, Campbell County is home to the cities of Gillette and Wright, along with the unincorporated communities of Recluse and Rozet. The County seat, Gillette, was originally dubbed “Donkey Town,” but was renamed for the 1890s railroad surveyor Edward Gillette. Small coal mines sprung up around Gillette in 1909—the first major coal mine built is Wyodak, located east of Gillette on I-90. During the 1970s, more coal companies opened larger surface mines in Campbell County, and currently there are 14 mines in the county. In the 1940s oil exploration began in the Gillette area—the first commercial oil field discovery was in 1948. Coal bed methane, natural gas, production began in Campbell County in the late 1990s.
